Combined Breeds: Wendy Young
We are thrilled to welcome – all the way from the UK – the Combined Breeds’ judge , Wendy Young.Wendy was born and bred into the well-known Dairy Shorthorn herd, Churchroyd (Yorkshire). Churchroyd notably bred the first EX97 dam-and-daughter combination in any breed in the UK.Wendy has always had a keen interest in showing, and she made her profession from that passion. She is today self-employed as a cattle fitter. Wendy has turned out Champions and Interbreed Champions at all the major shows in the UK for many customers and for Churchroyd. When it comes to judging, Wendy is listed on the UK Dairy Shorthorn, Ayrshire, and Brown Swiss Judging panels. She has travelled throughout the UK, and Ireland judging different breeds and Interbreed – including the English Royal, the Royal Welsh, the Maclaren Dairy championship (Ireland) and the South West calf show. In 2012 Wendy travelled to Australia to judge the Royal Melbourne Show and the Murray Bridge Show (South Australia). She says the experience fuelled her desire to travel more, and to do more judging. In her spare time Wendy and husband James rear Churchroyd's young stock. She enjoys milking at home, and she also runs sales for UK livestock auctioneers and valuers Norton and Brooksbank. Wendy says she is looking forward to her first trip to New Zealand in 2025
Ayrshire Breed: Blaise Tomlinson
Blaise and his wife, Deborah, milk 250-head (200 Holstein with 50 Ayrshires) under Sandyford Ayrshires at Charnwood Forest, at Loughborough (21 minutes from Leicester in the East Midlands of England). Blaise’s name fits like a glove, given he and Deborah have “blazed” their own trail throughout their career. Evie tells the story about how Blaise started showing at the bottom of the line through to winning the UK’s Premier Ayrshire Breeder five out of 10 years (from accumulated breeder points at the UK Dairy Day, Royal, the Royal Welsh, Agriscot, the great Yorkshire Dairy Event, the Royal Norfolk, Cheshire, the south-west Dairy show, and the Welsh Dairy). He has judged at nearly every major show in the UK, in addition to Australia, South Africa and Jersey Island. He is also known for being his own man - a breed leader. 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 Blaise was the 2020 recipient of the John Dennison Lifetime Achievement Award in the UK – an acknowledgement of achievement, sportsmanship, integrity, and character. Sandyford is of the most highly regarded Ayrshire breeders in the UK and the greater global industry – and is at the forefront of modern examples of the breed being shown up and down the country. Sandyford also notably bred Ayrshire breed icon Sandyford Clover 10 EX97 – who won most of major interbreeds championships across the UK during her reign. Her granddaughter achieved a new breed record of 14,000gns (NZ$19,576) at the Black and White sale at Borderway Mart. Blaise is well-known for supporting young farmers and helping them show animals. He has hosted Ayrshire rallies at his farm, offering calves and facilities and he helped organise both the Ayrshire and Holstein National Young Members Weekend. He also houses various cows for families who don’t have the facilities, but who want to learn more about the business. While Blaise is a third generation to farm under Sandyford, the journey has not been without its challenges. In 2010 Sandyford completed a stellar year winning Champion Ayrshire at the Royal Cheshire show, Ayrshire and Supreme Champion at the Royal Welsh, and Ayrshire and Supreme champion at the Dairy Event. They also collected Champion Ayrshire at the All-Breeds All-Britain calf show that calendar show year. However, life with animals can pivot quickly. Less than 12 months later they were forced to slaughter 201 of their herd – because of Tuberculosis – including 48 EX or VG two-year-olds. Clover 10 was saved because she had been isolated all year. She went on to give the family some solace, when she won Champion and Supreme Champion at the Dairy Event. They have since re-built, pushed through the loss and hosted high profile sales on-farm. 𝐑𝐄-𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆Blaise says he is looking forward to re-connecting with Kiwi Ayrshire breeders who travelled to the UK and Ireland for the World Ayrshire Federation Conference in June. Blaise and Deborah are supported by their three daughters, Evie (together with fiancé Ifan Wilson, who live in Wales), Annabelle, and Millie.

2025 Associate Breed Judges
Holstein Friesian: Sarah Leech
During the day Sarah can be found at Vetora in Putaruru as a receptionist, now being in her 14th year in the veterinary industry.
Sarah along with her partner Tristan have recently purchased her family farm in Tirau, where with help from her Dad, Graeme, are milking a small herd of pedigree Ayrshires to rear calves.
Sarah has been predominately involved with the Ayrshire breed from a young age with the family attending many A&P Show. In 2014 Sarah started her Holstein Friesian journey by adding a black and white calf into the family red herd. Now there are 5 black & whites with her ‘Atlantic’ prefix with 4 of those descending from the original calf.
Sarah has been the Associate Holstein Friesian judge at the Christchurch A&P show in 2016, Stratford A&P show in 2017 & 2022 and in 2024, and more recently the Senior judge for Holstein Friesian NZ at Te Aroha A&P show in November 2024
She is looking forward to judging at NZ’s premier cattle show in 2025.
Ayrshire Breed: Karen Feek
Karen Feek has been passionate about farming since she left school. Once she discovered what pedigree cows were and what showing cattle alongside the Steiner family meant to her. The passion for cows and farming ignited further. Her foundation cow "Brookview Feek Surprise" for her stud "Harvest Ayrshires" was gifted to her after helping at a show many years ago. Her stud name inherited from her parents, and under her ownership has been built up to 63 head of cattle.
Karen and her cows are on a 150ha challenging block of land on the Awhitu Peninsula where she is Sole Manager. Milking 210 cows with 50 rising 1 year olds on the back of the property can make calving a bit busy for her. Currently in her 5th season managing this farm, the time will come for her to climb the career ladder where she will be going 50/50 sharemilking.
In 2023 Karen finally built up enough confidence to sit her judging ticket, she now holds a senior pass. She was very honored to be the delegate representing New Zealand for the 2024 Ayrshire World Photo Competition.
Outside of farming and showing Karen likes to travel and explore she is planning on attend the 2028 Ayrshire World Conference in Sweden.
She is looking forward to NZDE and wishes everyone a safe journey to the show.
